Science, Mathematics, and statistics are part of our everyday life. It is much more than just learning about Biology, calculus, and figures! This industry is so broad you could find yourself working in a variety of different roles and in some strange and exciting places! You could be working underground drilling to the earth’s core, working in Australia being a Zoologist, in a laboratory finding cures for diseases, working for a big multi-national company in the city, or even for a small solar powered firm in the countryside. The opportunities are endless.
Over the years, there has been a big increase in skills shortages in Scientific, Engineering and, Mathematical careers, with the majority of companies having to bring in skilled workers from aboard.
National
- The UK is Europe’s top location for investment in pharmaceutical and Biotechnology research and development.
- 39% of bioscience companies report hard-to-fill vacancies and 22% have skill shortages – five times greater than other sectors.
- The UK aerospace industry has over 700 workplaces, with up to 400 maintenance, repair and overhaul sites.
- 23% of the Mechanical sector has skill gaps.
- The Mechanical sector needs over 67,000 people to replace those retiring or leaving their jobs between 2005 and 2014.
Yorkshire and Humber
- There are over 400 chemical manufacturing sites in the Yorkshire & Humber region with an annual turnover of over £8bn and employing 24,000 people.
- The environmental technologies sector is well established and diverse in Yorkshire & Humber employing 14,000 people in 500 companies.
- Yorkshire & Humber is a world leader in the production of metals and alloys employing over 114,000 people and generating over £4.9bn a year.
- The universities within this region have over 11,000 engineering graduates and postgraduates each year, that’s 12% of the UK total.

There are some job opportunities available for people who wish to start their careers at a technician or assistant level, the most popular route is through the apprenticeship route. The majority of careers within this sector require a high level of specialist education, or a relevant degree from university or higher, such as a postgraduate or a Doctorate qualification. Work experience is also valued in this particualr work area.
