Good information, advice and guidance is key to helping young people make the right decision when leaving school, whether they choose to stay in education, training or employment.

National Careers Service

The new National Careers Service will be estabilshed from April 2012 giving schools the autonomy to make their own arrangements for careers guidance and they will no longer be required to engage with any one particular provider. The rationale for this is:

‘Individual schools and colleges know their own learners and are better placed to assess their needs than anyone else. So it follows that on them must fall the responsibilitiy for ensuring that all learners get the best advice and guidance possible.’

According to an article ‘The role of schools and local authorities in career guidance’ it clearly states that ‘Local authorities will retain their statutory duty to enable, encourage and assist young people’s participation in education and training. There is still a commitment to raise the participation age to 18 by 2015, the Early Intervention Grant will help local authorities to support vulnerable young people to engage in education and training, intervening early with ose who are at risk of disengagement. It will aslo support transitional arrangements so that young people have access to impartial careers guidance in advance of the changes to the provision of careers service taking effect.
