Money for Further Education
What you are entitled to changes all the time, therefore make sure you keep up to date by clicking on www.direct.gov.uk
If you are thinking about staying in full time study then you may be able to claim some extra money. Why don’t you look in to the following:
- Child Benefit – Your parents still can claim Child Benefit if you are aged between 16 – 19 and in relevant education or training.
- Discretionary Support Funds - These funds are available at sixth form or college to help with; childcare costs, accommodation costs, visits or field trips and equipment.
- 16-19 Bursary Funds – If you are aged 16-17 in care, a care leaver aged 16,17 & 18 years, or if you are aged 16,17 & 18 and get income support then you may able to access the bursary funds. For more details go to: www.direct.gov.uk
Money Work Based Learning
If you plan to go into work based learning you will be paid a wage or get other allowances/benefits. However what you get will depend on the route you decide to take.
If you choose to do an:
- Apprenticeship – you will be employed by a company and will be get paid a minimum wage of £2.50 per hour. This rate will apply to those apprentices under 19, or aged 19 and over but in the first year of their Apprenticeship.
Money for Employment
If you decide to get a job your employer must pay the National Minimum Wage, this will differ depending on your age.
From October 2010
| Age | National Minimum Way |
| 16-17 | £3.64 |
| 18-20 | £4.92 |
| 21+ | £5.93 |
This doesn’t apply for Apprenticeships/Advanced Apprenticeships.
If you need
- Help with childcare - The Care to Learn fund can pay for your childcare and additional travel costs if you are under 20 and in learning or training.
- Help with transport costs - If you are aged between 16 -18 you may be able to get help with your travel costs to get you to and from your place of learning.
