Application Form
An application form gives the employer or tutors an idea of the type of person you are and helps them decide whether you are suitable for the job or course you have applied for.
You may be asked to fill in an application on line especially if you are applying for a course or training. This will be done through the Common Application Process.
To get an interview you must stand out from the rest so make sure your application is good, below are some tips to get you started.
Presentation
- Practise your answers on a separate sheet of paper or on a photocopy of the form.
- Write clearly and neatly. Black ink photocopies better.
- Read any instructions carefully. For example use BLOCK CAPITALS if asked.
- If you make a mistake, cross it out neatly or use correcting fluid.
- If you make a number of mistakes, contact the company and request a replacement application form.
Content
- Before completing the form, read any information you have received from the employer to make sure you know exactly what you are applying for. If possible look at the company website.
- List any qualifications you have and those which you plan to take and give the date of the examination or final assessment.
- Include information about your achievements and interests for example, ASDAN awards, swimming and first aid certificates.
- If you have a Progress File make sure it is kept up-to-date.
- Use sentences wherever possible.
- Do not use text speak or slang that the reader will not understand.
- Do not leave any sections blank.
- If a section doesn’t apply to you write NOT APPLICABLE or N/A.
References
A reference is a recommendation from one person to another, usually talking about your positive qualities. These people are also known as referees. If you have to give the names of people who will write a reference about you, ask their permission first. They will usually be someone from your previous school, college or someone who has known you for at least 2 years, but not a relative.
Checking
- Ask someone to check your rough draft.
- A friend, relative or Connexions Personal Adviser may be able to spot a mistake that you have missed.
Returning the form
- Always remember to sign and date your form.
- Keep a photocopy of the form. You will need to look at it again if you are called for an interview.
- Always try to return the form well before the closing date, ideally within 2 to 3 days. If it arrives late you will not be considered for the job.
Most application forms have a ‘Reason for Applying’ or ‘Further Information’ section. This is a very important part of the form. It is your chance to sell yourself to an employer and increase your chance of getting the job you want .
